Economy to grow by over 4 per cent

The Botswana economy is expected to grow by 4.8 per cent in 2020 after registering a 4.2 per cent growth this year, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.
“This is a resounding growth and you must all be commended for your financial prudence during budget debates in Parliament,” President Masisi said at a farewell luncheon he hosted for members of the 11th Parliament August 8.
He commended MPs for their devotion and solidarity which he said characterised the 11th Parliament which is to dissolve today to pave way for the general elections.
President Masisi told MPs that Batswana had placed hope in them for a better future regardless of political affiliation.
He commended them for their sense of common purpose during the sitting which enkindled democracy further distinguishing Botswana from other countries.
On other issues, President Masisi reflected on some challenges which he said threatened democracy and solidarity, particularly the transition process that was hit by turbulence following the smooth handing over of power from former president Lt General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama.
“I am however grateful that such did not destabilise our democracy. In two months, we will all witness the hallmarks of democracy, as Batswana go to the polls to elect their preferred political leaders. Holding a free and fair election demonstrates our commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles,” he said.
Acting National Assembly speaker, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi commended President Masisi for attending Parliament and taking part in debates.
“Through his visionary leadership, parliamentarians’ conditions of service have since improved and I am confident that our Parliament will grow to match other advanced national assemblies around the region and the world,” he said.
However, he expressed hope to have debates broadcast live to give people a chance to follow Parliament proceedings.
Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Nonofho Molefhi said the luncheon marked the end the journey MPs started in 2014.
“Five years was a wink of an eye but I am happy that we made acquaintances. It has been a great five years for all of us,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 11th Parliament passed 96 laws, one private member’s bill, three policies as well as 32 private members motions. ENDS
