Chevening scholarships increase to nine
07 Aug 2019
Chevening has announced nine scholarships for the 2019/2020 cycle instead of the usual seven.
Speaking during the launch of the scholarships in Gaborone recently, British High Commissioner, Ms Katy Ransome encouraged interested people to apply.
Ms Ransome described the Chevening scholarship as a prestigious award that had produced some of the most prominent national and global leaders in various fields including human rights, media, politics, climate change and education.
She said Botswana’s Chevening alumni had a long history of making solid contributions to the social development of the country such as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Ms
Bogolo Kenewendo, Ms Kagiso Madibana and Ms Eunice Hanna.
“Our Botswana Chevening scholars and alumni are truly fabulous ambassadors for Botswana, they continually embody the spirit of the Chevening brand,” she said.
She said Minister Kenewendo had been chosen as one of the 35 alumni out of the 50 000-strong global network to be a Chevening change-maker to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the scheme.
High Commissioner Ransome also revealed that the Chevening Alumni Association of Botswana had been chosen by the Chevening Association as a case study for being one of the most active in the world.
She said this year’s returning scholars had contributed a huge amount to local communities in the UK through their volunteering and had travelled the length and breadth of the country making new friends and promoting the country.
She expressed the hope that the scholars who would be going out would continue the mark left by alumni and continue to contribute to the development of Botswana and strengthen UK-Botswana relations upon their return.
Chevening is the UK government’s global scholarship programme which offers prospective applicants an opportunity to pursue a one year master’s degree in any field at any UK university. ENDS
