Mater Spei College basketball champions

06 Aug 2019

Mater Spei College boys’ basketball team are this year’s Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) champions.

They beat defending champions Maru-a-Pula during the BISA games that started recently at Rainbow Secondary School and ends on Saturday.

It was sweet revenge for Mater Spei College who failed to snatch the championship last year. They narrowly beat Maru-a-Pula 74-67.

Mater Spei College managed to beat Maru-a-Pula in the first, second and fourth quarter, but had a tie in the third quarter.

In an interview, coach Tiro Serumola said Maru-a-Pula has been a tough team since he started coaching Mater Spei some years ago, although his team never missed to qualify for the BISA games.

He explained that the team got position two, four, two and one in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.

He said both teams never lost their games from the zonal stage to the finals when the two met, adding that Maru-a-Pula was one of the toughest basketball teams in the country.

Position one went to Mater Spei College whilst Maru-a-Pula settled for position two and third was Naledi Senior Secondary school.

The 12 boys team won themselves gold medals and a trophy.

Meanwhile, Mater Spei College also emerged champion in the girls’ volleyball team when they beat Moeng 3-2 in the final.

This was after Mater Spei girls beat Naledi Senior Secondary School in the semi-finals while Moeng qualified for the final after beating Maun Senior Secondary School.

Coach Tafa Gaba said he was impressed by the performance of the girls, especially that the school settled for a bronze medal in last year’s games when they were defeated by Nata senior in the semi-finals. ENDS
