Maun senior school aims for top 10 spot

06 Aug 2019

Maun Senior Secondary School is aiming to be among the top ten best performing senior secondary schools in the country.

Last year, the school got position 32 in the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results out of 34 senior schools with a pass rate of 15.46 per cent.

In preparation for this year’s final examinations, the school management recently engaged parents, stakeholders and pupils to solicit ideas on how best they could assist learners to attain their potential and pass with flying colours.

The Form five learners would be sitting for their final examinations in the next two months and some have already started projects for optional subjects.

During a meeting to solicit ideas, the school management appreciated that over 100 Form five pupils were promising as they scored over 34 points with four obtaining 48 points.

The school head, Ms Selebatso Modisaemang said the school had not been performing up to expectations, hence the meeting to share ideas in an effort to prepare the learners for the final examinations.

She said they had observed that during the third term, most of the pupils introspect and those who realise that they were not on the right track get emotionally affected, as they become frustrated and confused, which often results in rowdy behaviour.

On the other hand, those who feel they are on track, she said become excited and tended to relax a bit, which also affected them.

Ms Modisaemang said all learners needed guidance, support and assurance from both parents and teachers that they could still pass their examinations if they put more effort.

In addition, she revealed that it was paramount to prepare pupils and inform them about what is expected during the examinations.

Some pupils, she said abscond, while some missed classes and urged parents to encourage their children to attend school properly.

Ms Modisaemang stated that in previous years, they learnt that some pupils failed to write some examination papers because they did not follow the timetable.

“We believe that we should join hands to motivate our children during this critical time and I am happy to announce that we have a team of teachers who are eager to transform the school and strive for excellence,” she added.

The school head shared that recently, they engaged learners to see how best they could assist them and some of the ideas they suggested had already been implemented.

Some of the ideas were to introduce early studies every day before the assembly, to extend library operation hours and to reschedule afternoon studies.

Ms Modisaemang also appreciated that some parents had gone the extra mile to engage people to offer tutorial services to their children.

Meanwhile, the deputy school head, Mr Stephen Morris appreciated the good performance by the learners who got 34 points and above and motivated those who did not make it to not despair as there was still time to improve.

He encouraged them to work hard and take their studies seriously, adding that their target was for all pupils to aim for 36 points in order for the school to be amongst the top ten.

Mr Morris was optimistic that they would improve their position.

Parents appreciated the meeting and assured the school management of their unwavering support throughout the journey.

They appreciated efforts by the school to call a special meeting in preparation for the final examinations and also to recognise good performance saying it would motivate those still in school to strive for better results.

They also encouraged all learners to continue working hard, stay focused and not to be distracted by trivial things such as cell phones.

A former Maun Senior School learner, presented a video of past  Mathematics and double Science papers he has compiled which students could use for revision.

The video, he said could be accessed through a smart phone, DVD or laptop.

The video is sold P150.  ENDS
