Rannowane urges residents to support children

05 Aug 2019

Chief Justice Terrance Rannowane has urged Ramaphatlhe residents to play a role in the education of their children.

Speaking at the end of a 10 kilometre sponsored walk, he said parents who neglected their children were committing a criminal offence and could face a number of penalties, including taking the children away from them.

He said education should not be left for teachers, adding that the only difference between English medium and public schools was the role played by parents in the education of their children.

The head teacher of Ramaphatlhe Primary School, Ms Boipelo Matheo had complained that parents neglected their children which negatively affected their academic performance.

She said her school had experienced numerous cases of children being neglected, saying at times they were forced to refer cases to social and welfare officers.

She urged parents not to let their children suffer if they have differences.

Ms Matheo said the purpose of the sponsored walk was to raise funds for the school’s 10th anniversary, noting that it opened its doors in January 2009 with 74 pupils.

She explained that they survived through donations from different stakeholders as government could not do everything for them.

Ms Matheo said parents also found it difficult to support the school, as most of them could not even pay the P45 development fee.

She decried the lack of a health facility in the village, saying it disrupted pupil’s education as they had to travel for such services.

She explained that due to lack of school transport, teachers were forced to use their own resources to run school errands.

Kgosi Mmualefhe Dibe thanked stakeholders for always supporting the school. Ends
