Members of Botswana Police Service (BPS) continue to display exemplary dedication towards executing their duties, Police Commissioner Mr Keabetswe Makgophe has said.

Delivering remarks on the occasion of the official reception that drew to a close Police Day celebrations at the Special Support Group (SSG) Hall in Gaborone on Saturday, Mr Makgophe thanked police officers for the effort they committed to duty.

“Allow me to convey my sincere appreciation and thanks to the entire police community for continuing to display unmatched commitment, endurance, professionalism, courage and self- sacrifice amid all the challenges and risks that go with the policing profession,” Mr Makgophe said.

The occassion was graced by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, First Lady, Ms Neo Masisi, Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi and other dignitaries.

Mr Makgophe thanked the leadership for supporting the law enforcement climate in the country.

“I thank the President most sincerely for continuing to provide executive leadership and guidance to the police service which has ensured the prevalence of peace and tranquility in the country.

Also, through the wise counsel and guidance of Mr Kgathi since becoming our minister in 2014, the organisation has achieved significant milestones,” Mr Makgophe remarked.

He further praised the First Lady’s efforts to provide leadership towards addressing gender based violence and assisting the underprivileged.

Mr Makgophe revealed that they would pledge a P50 000 voucher in support of the First Lady’s social responsibility efforts.

The police commissioner further said policing in Botswana had undergone major transformation in the 135 year period since the formal law enforcement was established in 1884. He noted that post-independence the BPS had helped establish other vital security organs.

“The BPS through the visionary leadership of our former commissioners, Messrs Simon Hirschfeld, Norman Moleboge, Edwin Batshu and Thebeyame Tsimako contributed significantly to the formation of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), Directorate on Economic Crime and Corruption (DCEC) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS),” Mr Makgophe revealed.
