Lack of surveyed land delay allocation
25 Jul 2019
The Letlhakeng Sub-council chairperson says the waiting list for land allocation remain stagnant due to the Botswana Land Policy requirement that all land should be planned and surveyed before allocation.
When addressing Letlhakeng Sub-council meeting recently, Mr Thomas Batlhophi said sub-land board was faced with the challenge of shortage of surveyed land for allocation of both residential plots and ploughing fields.
He said the waiting lists for both residential plots and ploughing fields stood at 9 468 and 5383 respectively for all the villages covered by the Letlhakeng sub land board.
Mr Batlhophi said Letlhakeng village had the highest number of applications for residential plots at 3798 and 1453 for ploughing fields but applications were continually being received despite the existence of the waiting list.
He further said shortage of surveyed land also resulted in the sub-land board failing to allocate commercial or civic and community plots.
On the land registration exercise, Letlhakeng sub-land board currently stands at 56.2 per cent which was made up of plots that were inspected and there after being claimed.
He said plot inspections was at 100 per cent in the area, however not all the had been claimed.
Mr Batlhophi further said most plots which remained unclaimed were owned by government departments and parastatals with undeveloped commercial plots also remaining unregistered and unclaimed.
He said the sub-land board still had to complete affixing of plot numbers with only 75 per cent of plot numbers having been delivered and not all have been affixed due to challenges of plot number duplicates.
“However this problem has since been rectified with the department of Surveys and Mapping and we anticipate that the exercise will resume by beginning of August 2019,” he said. ENDS
