Selebi Phikwe has for the longest time been without representation in basketball.

Therefore, the newly formed Selebi Phikwe Knights Basketball Club would present an opportunity for the youth in the town to showcase their talent.

It was the first team from Selebi Phikwe to officially feature in the Botswana Basketball League (BBL) League B.

Speaking in an interview, the team’s public relations officer, Bryan Nkgau said the team was established by young people who wanted to see the town represented in basketball.

Nkgau, a decorated player who was 2016 and 2017 Botswana Tertiary Students Association gold champion and also former BDF V player, said the team came about to protect the legacy of the town in the sporting arena hence the name, Selebi Phikwe Knights Club.

“The name Selebi Phikwe Knights, denotes that we are always going to be here to protect and develop talent in Selebi Phikwe,” said Nkgau.

Nkgau, also known as Brizzy 27 in the sporting circles, expressed confidence in their players such players as Brian ‘Big Daddy B’ Mwansa who played for the national team, Gape Motsholathebe, who played for Francistown Flames and once donned the national team colours and Seomile ‘Millz’ Seomile, who also played for Francistown Flames and also represented the country in the Under 18 and 20 teams.

“Most of our players are those that we developed,” said Nkgau.

Nkgau said he was optimistic that the formation of the club was a step in the right direction to give the community an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the sport.

“We are aiming at winning the BBL League B and elevate to League A and be one of the major contenders there,” he said, explaining that he was proud of how the team debuted, winning their first game against BIUST Trojans at home to start their campaign on a high.

The team, he said, was expected to continue its momentum playing against UB Relics in an away game that took place in Francistown on Saturday.

Nkgau said though there were good facilities at the Selebi Phikwe Recreational Centre, the team was still faced with financial challenges and appealed for help. Ends
