Councillors fail to oust sub-council chairperson

11 Jul 2019

Councillors at the Ghanzi East Sub-district Council on July 9 failed to oust Mr Dichaba Thupe from the chairmanship position.

After they agreed to an urgent motion to unseat the chairperson, their numbers worked against their wish.

Councillors, who supported the motion, failed to meet the two-third majority as per the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Act number 20 sub-section 11.

Twelve councillors from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) voted for the motion against seven from the opposition.

Mr Thupe recently dumped BDP to join the Umbrella for Democratic Change.

The motion to unseat Mr Thupe was initiated by Grootlaagte councillor, Mr Ezekiel Kajuu.

Mr Kajuu was of a view that the chairperson  would no longer serve the interests of the party that put him in that position.

After this incident, the special sub-council meeting continued as planned and chairperson of the finance committee, Ms Gertrude Katlholo, presented a draft budget, which was passed.

Ms Katlholo stated that the overall proposed recurrent draft budget for 2020-2021 financial year was P 140 070 660, an increase of P33 918 020 or 32 per cent from the running budget of P106 151 740 for 2019/2020 financial year. ENDS
