Teachers and the community have been implored to work together in shaping pupils’ future, Kanye Private Secondary School acting school head, Mr Efa Wakwaya has said.

Speaking during a school management workshop on July 10, Mr Wakwaya mentioned sexually transmitted infections, indiscipline, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse as some of the challenges affecting pupils.

Consequently, he said the school management and the community were duty bound to ensure the well-being of the student community.

He advised that the community should participate in pupils’ educational activities and give them information to overcome everyday challenges.

Mr Wakwaya further reiterated that the mandate of the school management was to involve other stakeholders to resolve issues affecting pupils.

He urged pupils to work hard in their academics to reach their goals and destinations.

For her part, District Health Management Team representative, Ms Olebile Dikago advised pupils to focus on their studies, citing teenage pregnancy and drug abuse as some of the challenges that hinder the students’ academic progress.

She further informed pupils about the pre-exposures of teenage pregnancy as well as methods of contraception that could be availed to them.

She explained that teenage pregnancy could be influenced by drug abuse, rape, poverty and above all, peer pressure.

Ms Dikago further cautioned them about the dangers of unprotected sex, stating that it could increase the risks of contracting STIs and HIV.

She, therefore, encouraged pupils to seek assistance from health facilities when ever there was need.

Former Kanye Private Secondary School pupil, who is now the school head at Segopotso Primary School, Ms Segopodiso Maphage said dedication and determination were vital for them to succeed in their studies.

She encouraged pupils to always learn from their failures and never lose hope.

“It is never too late no matter the circumstances, never give up and work hard on your studies,” she said.

Ms Maphage urged pupils to set themselves goals, have a vision, choose friends wisely and form study groups to improve their academics.

She then implored pupils to be responsible, take good care of themselves and refrain from bad behaviour. ENDS
