Official encourages voters inspect voters roll

10 Jul 2019

Voters have been encouraged to thoroughly inspect the voters’ roll.

Kgalagadi District principal elections officer, Mr Richard Senthumoleng, said in an interview that inspecting the voters roll would enable voters to avoid situations where they would be rejected yet not knowing about it.

He said if one was rejected and did not take time to make corrections, they would not be permitted to participate during the general election.

He said Kgalagadi region had registered 28 515 with Kgalagadi South registering 16 794 voters, while Kgalagadi North registered 11 721.

Mr Senthumoleng said the numbers had increased when compared to the 2014 general election where 16 371 voters had registered to vote in both Kgalagadi North and South.

He encouraged voters to inspect the rolls, especially those who registered during the second supplementary registration.

“Inspection started on 27 June and shall end on July 17, therefore voters should come and verify details, this is the time to make changes if there are any…,” he said.

His main concern was that people were not coming forth to inspect the roll, adding “we see only prospective candidates enquiring but the individual voters are not coming”.

However, he said the current cycle accorded the voters an opportunity to transfer and make duplicates if they had lost their registration cards, adding that no duplicates shall be done on polling day.

Mr Senthumoleng said after the inspection window closed on the two rolls; the general voter registration and the first supplementary registration, Kgalagadi South constituency had no objections, while Kgalagadi North had 133 objections, which were at the courts of law.

He said most of the cases involved voters who had registered in wards where they did not reside. ENDS
