Donation vision SDGs compliant

09 Jul 2019

A donation of four houses to the needy  in the Tonota Sub-district is said to be in line with both Vision 2036 the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Handing over one of the houses to Ms Mmaphaleche James of Tonota o July 9, Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Machana Shamukuni said the donation addressed pillar two of the national vision about human and social development as well as SDG three addressing health and wellbeing.

The house is one of four built by Choppies Distribution Centre Company. The other three houses have been built at Serule, Foley and ShasheMooke for Mr Obolokile Mogosi, Ms Kesotegile Modumo and Kadzine Bulala respectively.

Mr Shamukuni explained that government had made a nationwide appeal to those with the means to assist by providing shelter and other human needs to the less privileged.

Choppies, he said, found it fitting to heed government’s call and build the four houses to the tune of P500 000.

Mr Shamukuni noted that Choppies did not only contribute towards shelter but continued to support other innovative programmes aimed at improving the lives of people in the areas of health and culture.

He further urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the houses.

Speaking at the same event, Choppies spokesperson, Mr Jacob Sesinyi explained that the company had over 80 shops across the country employing over 7 000, most of them citizens.

Mr Sesinyi promised that Choppies would continue to assist in the socio-economic development of Batswana as a way of giving back to the community.

Giving an overview of the project, Tonota Central councillor Mr Chrisjan Machokoto explained that the sub district council had planned to build 15 houses for the needy each financial year but always failed to reach the target as requests often exceeded 100.

It was against that backdrop that the council approached Choppies for assistance, he said.

The company started in Lobatse in 1986 with a second store opening in the town in 1993. From 1993, Choppies embarked on an expansion drive opening new stores in the greater Gaborone area and ultimately across the whole country. ENDS
