Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS), Kanye Branch, has been applauded for role it plays in the lives of young people.

Former Mosi Primary School  headteacher, Ms Keamogetse Ntwaagae praised the organisation during a recent lunch the society hosted  for the orphans and vulnerable children, where MrPrice, Kanye branch donated toiletries and toys.

She commended BRCS for providing humanitarian aid to alleviate human suffering to the most vulnerable communities.

“Let me commend Red Cross for their contribution in raising these children, and making sure that they fulfill their purpose in life,” she said.

She further implored the children to understand that they were special and unique in their own rights and essential in the development of the nation.

Ms Ntwaagae urged the children to establish Red Cross Clubs in their schools, as they were capable of making a difference in the world.

She implored parents to be active in the upbringing of their children and  to groom them into responsible adults.

“Our children are our hope in uplifting our lives and carrying the baton of faith and our will in stirring a better future,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Elesaone Kgopana, Principal Education Officer at the Southern Regional Education Office, encouraged parents to groom responsible children.

She indicated that lack of parenting was a challenge as mostly parents leave their children under the care of their grandparents.

“Child negligence is widespread amongst our society. Parents do not have time to care for their children as they believe that money is the way to caring for their children,” she said.

Ms Kgopana emphasised that parents needed to understand that, it was their responsibility to ensure good parenting for their children.

“Let us not overlook our roles as parents. It is us as parents who have to teach our children morals and societal expectations,” she said.

In his remarks, BRCS Southern Division, Programmes Officer, Mr Russian Gakeolope noted that they had registered 60 orphans aged between three and 18 years and have seven volunteer members, who were trained to provide psychosocial support and youth development.

“Our mission is to protect lives, prevent diseases, provide a range of services including disaster management, health and psychosocial support and restoring family links amongst others,” he said.

Mr Gakeolope noted that mostly they work with the District Health Management Team, and they meet with the orphans after every week, to help with their school work and also conduct educational trips with the assistance of various sponsors.

“Basically, we cultivate a more diverse base of youth volunteers and address local needs of vulnerable people,” he said. ENDS
