Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) held its First Aid competitions over the weekend, under the theme: Life Matters: One Second Counts’.

The guest speaker, Deputy Divisional Commander for Central District, responsible for Traffic, Mr Pelontle Kesupile explained that first aid training gives one the vital knowledge and skills needed to respond to life threatening situations.

He said whilst emergency situations could not be predicted, through first aid training, one can at least be prepared to administer assistance when a situation occurs.

Mr Kesupile pointed out that first aid training should not only be applied to mines, quarries, works and machinery plants, but in all spheres of the work place as well as families as people continue to perish due to lack of such important skills.

He commended the mine for holding the competitions to sharpen the skills and readiness of administrators to handle emergency situations as well as for including organisations such Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS), Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), Palapye Technical College (PTC).

Mr Kesupile said such competitions serve as a benchmark for other entities to improve on their life-saving skills.

The mine’s SHE Manager, Mr Gontsemang Ntshinogang said the event also served as an opportunity for spectators to learn about first aid issues.

Meanwhile, six teams that particpated included Delta from MCM, Ecco representing Palapye Technical College, Romeo from Botswana Power Corporation, Zulu and Bravo for MCM and Charlie representing DRTS.

The competition was categorised into indiviual, teams and team work assimilation.
