English programme launches

23 Jun 2019

US Ambassador to Botswana Mr Craig Cloud recently launched the English Access Micro-scholarship Programme that aims at, among others, making students better leaders.

The programme, which is rolled out by Eagles Avenue in partnership with the US embassy, started in April at Meepong JSS in Selebi Phikwe.

Launching the programme at Makhubu Club on June 19 , Mr Cloud commended Eagles Avenue for partnering with the US embassy to roll out the programme.

Eagles Avenue Support Group is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation based in Selebi Phikwe that provides outcome-based study and life skills training and offers guidance and counselling.

Mr Cloud said the programme allowed students to open their minds to new possibilities, particularly jobs that require articulate people with good leadership skills.

He said leadership was a special skill required in the job market.

He said the programme would also build confidence among pupils and make them better leaders.

He urged pupils undergoing the programme to attend classes without fail and to do their best, adding that education was important as it enhanced one’s knowledge.

He also thanked parents for their support, and also encouraged them to always abide by the contract.

Eagles Avenue programme manager Mr Michael Legodi thanked the US embassy for the partnership, which he said would help enhance the learning abilities of pupils.

The two-year programme, he said, would help improve the pupils’ communication in English and build their confidence.

The programme started with 36 form one pupils at Meepong JSS and classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

He said so far the programme has helped pupils develop reading skills and promoted the spirit of teamwork.

Meepong JSS school head Ms Dorcus Olebile also thanked Eagles Avenue and the US embassy for considering Meepong to host the programme over other schools.

She said Meepong was not chosen by luck as the school had attained position two in the JC exams nationally for two consecutive years.

She thanked the parents and teachers for their commitment and support for the programme.

“I believe this programme is going to benefit these children and will go a long way in enhancing academic performance at Meepong,” she said. ENDS
