Elections collective undertaking for stakeholders
20 Jun 2019
An official of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr Dintle Rapoo, says all should ensure that the electoral process is carried through with ease.
He said this at the ongoing Gaborone city council full meeting where he addressed councillors about the state of readiness of the IEC for the upcoming general elections.
Mr Rapoo urged councillors to realise that the Electoral Act was not flawed, but it was the actors and stakeholders that led to unlawful situations within the processes and procedures.
He said due to this fact that the integrity and processes of the electoral process were in jeopardy, councillors needed to be transparent to voters and desist from giving favours for votes.
Mr Rapoo further asked councillors to share various electoral processes with voters to ensure that they were informed of nomination processes and able to support the candidate of their choice.
He also revealed that the supplementary voters roll inspection was still underway and urged councillors to ensure that voters check the voter’s roll when it was certified to ensure that their names were on it, adding that voter apathy was still a problem in Botswana.
He said of the envisaged 1.3 million voters, which was the set target for the 2019 general election, the registered number of voters was 73 per cent below the target. ends
