Sir Seretse Khama Day committee will hold a sponsored walk in Serowe tomorrow as a momentum build up to Sir Seretse Khama Day commemoration.
The legacy of the founding president is celebrated annually on July 1 and the recent years have witnessed the day attracting a handful.
As a result, the committee secretary, Mr Kagiso Lekgoane said that they had planned a series of events to create awareness and also raise funds towards the main event to be commemorated in Serowe on July 1.
The Secretary said the sponsored walk would kick-off at 7am from Serowe Bus Rank via old Sekgoma Hospital and join the A14 (Serowe/Palapye) road by Morula junction, ending the at the main kgotla.
Mr Lekgoane said that they had engaged University of Botswana officials to consider holding a public lecture or a debate in Gaborone, as they had facilities to host such events.
He said holding it in Gaborone would also generate interest among young people in the city, adding that people should desist from viewing the day as a public holiday only, but attach some significance to it.
The committee’s spokesperson said the late president Sir Seretse Khama should be remembered for his deeds such as being instrumental in the formation of Southern African Development Coordinating Conference, among others and also a part of the country’s history that needed to be shared with the youth.
The secretary said that UB officials had agreed to hold a book review based on Sir Seretse Khama Biography scheduled for Khama III Memorial Museum on June 21 at 2pm.
He said that their wish was for members of the public to attend the review in numbers and learn about the late states man.
The committee secretary said they would also have Sir Seretse Khama inspired visual art exhibition at Serowe Old Mall on June 27-28.
They have collaborated with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development as the custodians of the artists.
“Artists have a special way of relating events via their creations, hence finding it fit to include them.”
Ladies will also battle it out for this year’s title during the annual beauty pageant slated for Serowe College of Education on June 28.
“We implore the residents to support our activities to ensure that we execute a successful event on the first.
The committee members are volunteers without a standing sponsor and rely on donations, so if people attend in numbers we will definitely attain a thing or two through proceeds.”
Mr Lekgoane said that they wanted this year’s event to be a warm up to the centenary commemoration of the late president, due in two years.
He said funds permitting they would keep the ‘fire burning’ until 2021. ENDS
