Vice President Slumber Tsogwane says government is proud of the senior national football team, Zebras’ performance at the just-ended COSAFA Cup tournament that was held in Durban, South Africa.
Tsogwane was speaking at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport on June 9 when welcoming the team from South Africa.
The Zebras lost 1-0 to Chipolopolo of Zambia at Moses Mabhida Stadium on June 8.
Despite losing the game, he said the Zebras produced a gallant fight against Chipolopolo, which was a clear sign that they meant business. He said he was impressed by Zebras’ first game against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana as they came from behind to claim victory.
Though the team did well, he said they were unlucky in the final. He further said he was happy that Batswana rallied behind the team during the tournament.
On other issues, Tsogwane admitted that development structures in Botswana were not given attention, saying going forward, there was a need to develop sport, as it had potential.
For his part, Botswana Football Association (BFA), vice president-technical, Segolame Ramotlhwa said the association was happy with Zebras’ performance.
He said the team produced a better performance during the tournament.
“I think they played well due to the introduction of younger players. Maybe the team was revived by the youngsters or maybe they were hungrier,” he said. He said during the final, the Zebras displayed good football, as they gelled as a team. Despite not winning the trophy, he said they played with maturity. ENDS
