A South East District elections official has appealed members of the Party Liaison Committee to help locate the 219 potential voters rejected by the registration system.

 Speaking during a recent committee meeting, South East District principal elections officer Ms Pelonomi Selemogwe-Kwaramba said her office was having a tough time locating all of the rejected potential voters - 162 in Tlokweng constituency and 57 in Ramotswa constituency. 

 In Tlokweng, two were rejected because they were underage, nine for using different names, 12 on account of non-existing Omang and 139 because they had registered elsewhere. 

In Ramotswa’s case, three were classified underage, six used different names, eight for non-existing Omang while 41 were rejected for having registered elsewhere.

Ms Selemogwe-Kwaramba requested party members to help by sensitising the community. 

She said political parties in the district would receive copies of the voters’ roll to help in identifying the rejected voters. 

Ms Selemogwe-Kwaramba said should some of those rejected go to court, the office would implement the outcome.

On objections, the principal elections officer said the office had so far not received any for either Tlokweng or Ramotswa constituencies.

She told the meeting that transfers would only be allowed after the certification of the voters roll. Ms Selemogwe-Kwaramba acknowledged that some of the rejected voters could have tried to transfer on their own  thereby creating duplicate registration hence the rejection.

In such a scenario, the Independent Electoral Commission system would recognise the first registration and reject the second, she explained. ENDS
