The Desert Research Institute in southern Nevada is keen to assist Botswana with technology to solve common water problems.

Its executive director, Mr Nathan Allen, said his organisation was one of the leading hydrologic science research institutions that among other things provided long term water technology solutions aimed at providing more effective and efficient management of water resources.

Briefing President Masisi and delegation currently on a working visit to the US, he said the institution partnered with and assisted countries with semi-arid conditions such as Botswana with water related technology.

“Nevada is the driest state in the US and there is demand for technology to help us improve how we manage our water here,” he said.

Mr Allen said through the Waterstart Channels for Innovation Programme - a joint venture between academic, public and the private sector - the institution conducted research in all aspects of water and ecosystem sciences.

He said the institution provided expertise that promoted water innovation services to water management agencies around the world.

“We look forward to exploring possibilities and sharing our expertise with Botswana,” he said.

The Botswana delegation had visited the institution to explore possibilities of partnerships and skills sharing on water-related technology as well as to learn about managing water infrastructure and its upkeep and to find out if the institute provided water desalination technology. ENDS
