Water shortage to improve - council official

30 May 2019

Severe water shortage in Kanye and Moshupa will soon be a thing of the past as improvements to meet the demand in the two villages are underway.

Kanye Administrative Authority, senior assistant council secretary, Ms Thupayamodimo Okaile said this at the recently ended Kanye Administrative Authority sub-council meeting.

She said correspondences from Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) indicated that there were long term solutions to address the Kanye-Moshupa water supply challenges.

“The current long term intervention to the water supply challenge includes the drilling, equipping and interconnection of four boreholes at Dolokwana and Gasegogwane areas into the Kanye-Moshupa supply scheme,” she said.

Ms Okaile noted that currently water supply had a deficit of approximately 50 per cent.

She shared that the available boreholes abstracted over 24 hour cycles as opposed to the recommended maximum of 16 hours.

“The few hours interruption of electricity results in prolonged period of low pressure to no water supply and very slow system recovery,” she said.

She noted that the project was 95 per cent complete with three boreholes were operational and yielding a total of 1750m3 per day.

She noted that the operations were yet to be handed over to WUC.

“Kanye-Mmamashia North South Carrier connection, which is also underway, is also 85 per cent complete and expected to be complete by the end of July,” she said.

Kanye Administrative Authority  chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela said they had requested a meeting with Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services to lobby for procurement of stand-by generators for boreholes within the Kanye water supply well fields to address water supply challenges during power interruptions.

He said for a long time, shortage of water had been a major concern in the village, hence needed to be treated as a matter of urgency.

He said for quite some time, WUC had promised to mitigate the issues of water shortage, but in vain.

Mr Dibeela however expressed optimism that in the long run, there shall be improvement of water supply in the two villages.

“The council had turned down our plea to meet the minister of lands and water services, but we remain hopeful that the public outcry on water shortage will finally be put to rest,” he said. ENDS
