Council warns residents of closed cemetry
28 May 2019
Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) has expressed concern about some people who still bury their loved ones outside the boundaries of the closed Lodubeng Cemetery.
Senior assistant council secretary, Ms Thupayamodimo Okaile told a recent KAA session that as far back as 2016, the Sub-district erected a sign board at the area, advising the community that the cemetery was closed and that they should utilise the new one at Selete Soo Tau ward.
She said only a few heeded the call as some residents continued to bury their dead at the old cemetery.
She said it was recommended that wards that used Lodubeng Cemetery should contribute for the fencing of the old cemetery under the constituency community project funding for the financial year 2019-2020 and that each concerned ward development committee release two employees under their Ipelegeng quota to bush clear the old cemetery.
She said the sub-council had endorsed the recommendations and the administrative authority budgeted P150 000 for fencing of the old cemetery at Lodubeng.
She further said once the funds are released, fencing the old cemetery would be prioritised among projects that would be done in the first quarter of 2019/2020, adding that the Ipelegeng coordinator was working on logistics such as sustenance for employees that would be released for the cemetery’s bush clearing.
In response, councillors expressed disapproval of the use of the old cemetery by some members of the community.
They however indicated that there was need to speed up the fencing process in order to prohibit people from accessing the area.
Councillors also noted that some members of the community preferred the old cemetery as it was easily accessible, adding that the road to the current cemetery was in a bad state and needed to be graded. Ends
