Councillors decry collapse of projects
27 May 2019
yesterday shared frustrations that citizen empowerment projects were collapsing due to lack of monitoring and support across the sub-district.
Ms Ponatshego Tshiping was responding to Moshupa Sub -council chairperson’s speech during the on-going sitting in Moshupa.
In most cases, Ms Tshiping said beneficiaries were given incomplete packages, which anomaly defeated the spirit of the programmes.
She also raised a concern that some residents who were in the first batch approved for assistance and trained at Dikhukhung under LIMID in 2012 were yet to be assisted.
This, she said put the district and government in a bad light.
Ms Tshiping further applauded President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi for declaring 2018/19 a drought year and coming up with subsidies to cushion farmers.
On other issues, Lotlhakane West councillor, Mr Barati Gaapare also complained that only 164 out of 183 Poverty Eradication projects had collapsed across the sub-district due to termites infestation.
He said more should have been done to salvage the projects given the expertise the district had, adding that lack of action on the matter was inexcusable.
Mr Gaapare was also worried that some gravel roads in his area had long been eroded by Cyclone Dineo rains, but were never rehabilitated.
Another councillor, Mr John Taolo requested for a storm water drainage system for Lekgolobotlo, which was long promised.
He feared that further delays could result in flooding, considering that there was a dam nearby, fed by tributaries from the hills around the village.
Mr Taolo also challenged the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development to find innovative ways to revive youth horticulture projects, which collapsed due to flooding in Ntlhantlhe.
He said assisting the youth could enable them to service their loans and sustain themselves. Ends
