Sub-council to remove illegal billboards

21 May 2019

The South East South Sub-district is planning to remove all illegal billboards in its area jurisdiction.

The sub-district jurisdiction starts around Gaborone Commerce Park as well as Ramotswa, Otse, Taung and Lobatse farms area.

The sub-district chairperson, Mr Adolf Mosalaesi, said this during a full council session on May 20.

He said removal of illegal billboards would be a labour intensive exercise expected to be completed next month.

“This will be a taxing exercise in terms of resources and time,” Mr Mosalaesi said.

He said the council would move into the second phase of identifying illegal sign boards before rolling out the project.

Mr Mosalaesi stated that the council had for a significant amount of time been concerned about the mushrooming of illegal signboards and the situation was worsening.

“This is besides the standing guidelines for advertising and hoarding sign boards, which regulate such developments and require application before installation,” he cautioned.

Therefore, he pointed that the council had to mitigate the situation before it became uncontrollable.

He told the council that a public notice towards those who contravened the council regulations was circulated in the media and gave those affected 21 days grace period to abide by the law.

On other issues, Mr Mosalaesi told the sub-council that the district landfill had been facing complications due to the breaking down of the compactor in 2007.

However, he said the new compactor had been procured and it would be delivered before end of the month.

He said this would curb the challenges that the sub-council had been experiencing with regards to managing the land fill.

Furthermore, Mr Mosalaesi said the sub-council had engaged Ipelegeng workers to help with cleaning of toilets at primary schools.

He said this was prompted by councillor’s concerns about the shortage of cleaners to care for pupils at primary schools.

Regarding maintenance of schools, he regretted that contractors continued to fail the sub-council saying some had left the construction site.

He said this left the projects unfinished and disrupt the school maintenance and service delivery.

Regarding constituency community projects, he said the sub-council had made strides in accomplishing its road maintenance plan, which covered Ramotswa, Taung, Otse and Mogobane. ENDS
