Public servants key to better Botswana

19 May 2019

Public servants have been urged to have a positive approach towards work in the interest of good service delivery and a better Botswana.

Okavango Research Institute’s Professor Joseph Mbaiwa stated during the Department of Forestry and Range Resource excellent and distinction awards ceremony.

He said workers should understand that the future belonged to those who believed in their dreams and those of the country adding that their focus and attitude should be working at raising Botswana to be a great nation.

Prof. Mbaiwa said 'you watch your thoughts as they become words, your words as they become actions, actions as they become habits, habits as they become character and character as they become the destiny of the country’.

He advised them to face the future with hope and conviction that Botswana would one day be a great nation.

“Let us direct our thoughts, words, habits and character towards working with positive attitude so that we achieve excellence and be responsible citizens,” stated Prof. Mbaiwa.

Laziness, he said should never be condoned and lack of discipline never be tolerated since discipline was a key factor in achieving excellence.

He nevertheless applauded the department for recognising and rewarding employees for good performance, noting that excellence and distinction awards were government’s initiative to improve service delivery.

Prof. Mbaiwa noted that the initiative was for employees to know that they were being noticed and their contributions to their organisations valued.

To the awardees, he said excelling in their work advanced their mandate, wherever they were stationed. He encouraged them to continue going an extra mile and encouraged those not awarded to aim to achieve greatness.

Meanwhile, six employees were awarded for excellence and distinction, five for most customer centric, two for best performing teams and 10 for long service.

DFFR director, Ms Mmasera Manthe-Tsuaneng said the event was organised for employees to celebrate their achievements.

She said all employees were winners but it was impossible to award all of them hence selected a few. ENDS
