16 May 2019
Botswana’s 400 metres runner, Isaac Makwala and the 4x400 metres men’s relay, have been nominated for the AUSC Region 5’s Regional Annual Sport Award (RASA) scheduled for Namibia on May 25.
Makwala has been nominated for the sportsman of the year award together with Zimbabwean martial artist, Wilfred Mashaya and South African swimmer, Chad Le Clos.
In 2018, Makwala won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia and helped Team Botswana to win the 4x400m gold medal still at the Commonwealth Games.
Le Clos won his third gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games while Mashaya was the first African to become a Kobudo world champion.
Botswana 4x400m men’s relay team will fight for the sport team of the year with Banyana Banyana of South Africa and Malawi netball team.
Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) vice president, Kenneth Kikwe, said they were happy that their code had been nominated.
He said he was cognizant of the tough competition, adding that 4x400 was also a team to be reckoned with.
“The team has been nominated amongst the best, Banyana Banyana and Malawi’s netball team. We find ourselves in tight competition, but let us wait for the awards and see where it goes” he said.
Kikwe said for Makwala to be nominated with the likes of Le Clos and Mashaya, it was a clear sign of being among creme de le creme of sport. Ends
