Pupils drop-out worrisome
14 May 2019
Letlhakeng Sub-district continues to experience a high number of student school drop-outs.
Speaking during the official opening of Letlhakeng Sub-district Council session on May 13, Sub-council chairperson Mr Thomas Batlhophi said already four learners had dropped out at primary schools while 21 were from secondary schools for term 1.
He observed that there were more boys dropping out of school than girls, most of them leaving school without communication from parents.
Mr Batlhophi said this was a worrisome trend as he explained that efforts were being made to strengthen parental involvement and active Parent Teacher Associations in schools.
He further said as for pupils’ performance, a total of 1 371 Standard 7 learners wrote the end of term 1 examination compared to 1 340 for 2018 PSLE final.
He said the overall performance was 57.8 per cent ABC compared to 58.3 per cent ABC in the 2018 PSLE final examination and this shows a decline of 0.5 per cent.
Councillor Batlhophi said the overall performance for JCE (Form 3) was three per cent AB and 14.1 per cent ABC from a total of 340 pupils, who wrote term 1 examinations at Mahupu Unified Secondary School.
He said Lempu Junior Secondary School pupils were in the process of writing the exams since during the set time for exams the pupils had a mass hysteria attack.
He said the school performance in national examinations was below the regional target, promising that the sub-region would intensify supervision and monitoring of teaching and learning. ENDS
