Desperate measures... Sankoyo fans demand urgent meeting
14 May 2019
Some Sankoyo Bush Bucks supporters have appealed to club management to call an emergency meeting so that they can collectively prepare for the crucial encounter scheduled for May 18 in Maun.
Currently, Sankoyo is sitting in the red zone and with one game left against Extension Gunners.
The game would determine whether Sankoyo remain in the elite league or join the relegated Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Black Forest.
Supporters aired their views following a failed meeting on May 12.
They appreciated management’s efforts and that some supporters had lost hope on the team since it had been struggling, but stressed that an emergency meeting was crucial to solicit ideas from the membership on how best to survive relegation.
Supporters proposed that management, in collaboration with supporters committee, start activation activities to bring back the vibe, while some suggested rebranding the team.
The vice chairman, Sekai Morotsi expressed disappointment about the low turnout, noting that it was clear that supporters were failing the team as they never attend meetings in large numbers despite management’s efforts to use all communication channels.
He said they put banners in strategic points around Maun, had a radio sport announcements and social media but members still ignored the invitation.
He said it was frustrating as even the annual general meeting failed last year because of low turnout and yet they had registered an impressive number of members.
Morotsi noted that management is contemplating holding meetings in Sankoyo as there were more supporters from that village and the village trust has paid membership fees for more than 50 people so taking meetings there would be an advantage.
“Sankoyo trust has been our pillar of strength in terms of financial assistance and we believe taking our meetings to the community will make them,” he added.
He said the main objective of the Sunday (12 May) meeting was to kick start preparations for the annual general meeting and share some important issues regarding the team.
The meeting was also to discuss strategies to intensify membership recruitment, amend the constitution and map the way forward regarding the teams’ status.
At the end, an agreement was reached to hold the meeting on Thursday 16 May around 1700hours, with the venue to be communicated in due course.
Sankoyo will host Extension Gunners on the 18th May at Maun Sports Complex.
The game, which is also crucial to Gunners, which is currently in position nine and is eyeing top eight starts at 4pm. Ends
