14 Aug 2013

The Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Leboonamang Mokalake, has told Parliament that the total number of applicants for SHHA who are awaiting allocation by the Gaborone City Council is 20 246.

Answering a question from the MP for Gaborone Central, Mr Dumelang Saleshando, the minister said the age analysis of the waiting list is that between zero-five, there is none, five to 15, there are 698, while 15 years and above there are 13 258 applicants.

He said the oldest applications for SHHA plots are for 1 986. Mr Mokalake said currently, a total of 1 072 plots at Tsholofelo Extension are available and being processed for allocation. He added that given the number of applicants who have been on the waiting list for over five years, it will not be possible to process all applications.

He explained that it should be understood that people remain on the waiting list for long periods due to shortage of serviced land and therefore, land is allocated only when it is available.

Mr Saleshando had asked the Minister the total number of applicants for SHHA scheme who are awaiting allocation by the Gaborone City Council and the age analysis of the waiting list, and when applicants who have been on the waiting list for over five years should expect to have their applications processed.
