Veld fire management meet May 14

Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, through the Department of Forestry and Range Resources (DFRR), will host the 7th National Wildland Fire Management conference in Maun, from May 14 to 16.
Briefing the media about the upcoming two-day conference, DFRR Technical Support Services’ Mr Jomo Mafoko said the event was meant to promote implementation of the fire management strategy, facilitate information sharing and promote collaborative partnership in fire management.
The conference themed, Fire Management: A key to Sustainable Livelihoods, Mr Mafoko said would deliberate on fire management strategies and emerging issues around fire management.
Additionally, he said other topics to be discussed would include Australia’s support in fire management, national disaster management in Botswana, community role in fire management and traditional fire management from indigenous rangers.
He also noted that about 200 participants were expected to attend the conference, which would be officiated by the Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Kostantinos Markus on behalf of environment minister, Mr Kitso Mokaila.
The participants, he said, would be from Australia, Botswana and neighbouring SADC countries such as South Africa, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe. ENDS
