Government has not acceded to the request by South East South Sub-district Council to change its name to GaMalete sub district council.

Speaking in a kgotla meeting meant to update constituents about the district developments in Ramotswa on May 6, South East District chairperson, Mr Phenyo Segokgo said the sub-district council would in the meantime continue with its current name.

He said the district leadership had decided to seek the attention of the vice president after the minister responsible informed them that the issue was above his authority.

Mr Segokgo told the meeting that the district leadership would not rest until the issue was ironed out, saying they believed that the South East South name misrepresented them.

He told the community that the name change was initiated by the community, hence the need for the council to bring feedback to the community, whether positive or negative.

Sefhoke ward councillor in Tlokweng stated that from the previous community engagements, it was obvious that the community did not approve the name since they have never suggested it.

On other issues, Mr Segokgo said the council had managed to pave some of the internal roads that the residents had put forward.

Among those paved are in Magope, Makoloboto, Mogobane, Otse and Lesetlhana.

He further said they had sourced money for storm water drainage in Ramotswa to alleviate the challenges that came with rainfall in the village.

Also, the councillor said the council had decided to outsource litter collection in the village to the private sector.

However, he regretted that the community was not paying the P10 per month cost sharing fee, despite that it costs the council huge sum of money to collect litter. In their comments, the public complained about litter which were disposed along the road and becoming an eyesore.

The public called for mothers to be cautious on how they dispose diapers to curb the problem while others called for the council leadership to establish why the Gamalete sub-council name was not acceded to. ENDS
