Police investigate death of 29 year old woman

Kachikau police are investigating an incident in which a 29-year-old woman of Serowe was certified dead on arrival at Kasane Hospital after a JCB fell on her.  

Superintendent Situme Budani, explained in an interview that the incident took place in Muchenje village on May 2 at 6pm. He said the woman’s body was retrieved under the JCB with the help of Botswana Defence Force and Chobe District Council’s Fire Department.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the woman together with other people was trying to load the JCB on a low bed truck when the machine fell on her.

In another incident the poice were investigating, Senior Superintendent Mack Sonny said four elephants were hit and killed by a truck in the early hours of May 5.

He said the accident occurred the Kazungula Road.

Senior Supt Sonny said the driver of the truck was treated and discharged the same day.

He explained that while the Department of Wildlife and National Parks officials removed the tusks and the community scrambled to harvest the meat without official authorisation.

Snr Supt Sonny cautioned that it was risky for community members to harvest wildlife meat without permission from the relevant authorities as wild animals such as elephants were anthrax carriers.

He said the truck driver was charged for careless driving.

He however cautioned drivers using the A33 Road and other roads in the district to always be vigilant as wild animals roamed the roads. ENDS
