Street cleaning tender cancelled
14 Aug 2013
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, through the Francistown City Council, has cancelled the tender for street cleaning and waste collection in most locations of the city and outsourced litter picking and waste collection in the Central Business District (CBD) including Central and Minestone wards, Parliament has learnt.
Responding to a question from the MP for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi, the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso explained that in the rest of the city, council crews did waste collection.
She said savings accruing from the use of council crews for refuse collection would be used to purchase refuse collection trucks and other necessary equipment. Furthermore, she said small contractors would also be engaged to collect and transport litter and waste to the landfill.
MP Mmolotsi had asked the minister to explain when the outsourcing of rubbish collection would start in Francistown given the amount of rubbish in the city that remains uncollected for days. Ends
