IEC rejects 129 voter registration cards in two constituencies

25 Apr 2019

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has rejected about 129 voter registrations for both Selebi Phikwe West and Selebi Phikwe East constituencies.

Addressing the Party Liaison Committee during a meeting in Selebi Phikwe, principal elections officer Ms Christinah Sesinyi informed the committee members that the registrations were rejected due to a number of reasons citing underage, different names which did not correspond with the national identity card, multiple registrations and non-existent identity cards.

She said most rejections in both Selebi Phikwe constituencies were as a result of multiple registrations, where 65 registrations were rejected at Selebi Phikwe East while 35 were rejected at Selebi Phikwe West.

She said some people registered more than once because of loss of their registration cards while some wished to transfer to other areas.

She requested the committee members to enhance voter education and encourage those who lost their registration cards to consult the IEC office after the voters roll had been certified.

Furthermore, Ms Sesinyi informed the committee that her office had identified an error on one registration book bearing the serial number 00388251 to 00388275 at Ikageleng Phase One at Tlhabologo Primary School.

She urged those whose cards bearing serial number ranging between 00388251 and 00388275 to consult IEC office for corrections.

She also urged people eligible to register for the coming general elections to register in the ongoing second supplementary voter registration, which started on April 15 and is expected to end on April 28.

She also urged all stakeholders to encourage those who registered in the general voter registration to inspect the voters’ roll, which is available for inspection at the Independent Electoral Commission office, dikgotla, district administration offices and the council.

She said inspection of the roll, which started on April 8, would end on May 20, urging those who identified some discrepancies to consult her office.

Ms Sesinyi said during the inspection of the roll, voters were expected to check their status, full particulars and report any queries to Independent Electoral Commission office.

Regarding the ongoing second supplementary registration, Ms Sesinyi said 854 people had registered as at April 21.

Of this number, she said 443 were for Selebi Phikwe East while Selebi Phikwe West registered 411.

She urged all those who were eligible to register to do so as this was the last supplementary registration.

She said so far both the Selebi Phikwe constituencies had recorded low numbers compared to the 2014 voter registration. ENDS
