District governor calls for membership drive

District governor of Lions Club for Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe has challenged Batswana to join the club in large numbers to bolster their chances of garnering more support from Lions Club international.
Speaking during a tour of eye ward at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital where Lions Club had donated eye equipment at the tune of about P360 000 in 2016, district governor, Mr David Saunyama appealed to doctors at the hospital to consider establishing a specialty club.
The club donated two slit lamps and a microscopee. The equipment aided patient assessment.
Mr Saunyama said with their numbers, health professionals at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital could formulate specialty clubs which could stand a chance to seek financial assistance in the excess of millions to the benefit of their communities and indeed the hospital.
The Zimbabwean born, Mr Saunyama also threw the challenge to the general populace of Botswana to join the club, adding that the country stood to benefit immensely in addressing humanitarian issues.
He said the current 600 membership in Botswana was low considering the over two million population. Mr Saunyama revealed that from the 600 members a good number of them were expatriates who would leave the country at the end of their contracts.
“What would happen when they are gone?” the district governor asked rather rhetorically before rallying Batswana to own the club for the interest of the disadvantaged members of the community.
During a visit where he intended to appreciate the impact his club was making to the community and how best they could further assist, Mr Saunyama also received donations from Serowe Central Lions Club to the victims of Idai cyclone in Mozambique.
The Club donated food hampers, blankets and clothes.
The district governor called for more donations saying that in many instances the victims who received a plate a day counted themselves very lucky. ENDS
