The Lions Club of Lobatse has donated a variety of food items, clothes, surgical and medical equipment worth P60 000 to victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

When handing over the donation to the Red Cross Society on April 15, president of the Lions Club of Lobatse, Mr Amjad Ali, explained that the items were collected from the Muslim community and Lobatse community.

Mr Ali stated that they had been doing charitable work for a long time and were always willing to assist those in need.

Senior Superintendent Paul Molapisi of Woodhall police commended the club for extending a helping hand to disadvantaged people even beyond the borders of this country.

“It is through hard work and dedication that you have done this noble deed of giving out material support to the victims which is the most needed one,” Mr Molapisi said.

He said giving a person something when they were in need would make that person appreciate and never forget the good thing that was done for them when they needed help the most.

For his part, a member of the Red Cross Society of Zimbabwe Mr Godfrey Munyoro appreciated what the Lions Club of Lobatse had done for them during tough times.

“We are humbled by your generosity towards us as Zimbabweans and other countries that have been affected by this disaster.

And it really means a lot because this is not the first time after this storm that we are receiving the donations from Botswana.

We had already received donations from Jwaneng and Kanye,” Mr Munyoro said.

Cyclone Idai caused severe flooding and caused catastrophic infrastructural damage in the three countries of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi last month.

It left over 1 000 people dead and a thousands more missing.

In the aftermath of the cyclone, there was a cholera outbreak which left many people dead. ENDS
