Government restructures WUC
11 Apr 2019
Government has allocated P202 million towards the restructuring of Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) with a view to addressing skills alignment, customer focus and process improvements.
Assistant Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi said he was adamant that there would be enhancement in the corporation’s execution of its mandate.
Answering a question in Parliament on April 9, Mr Moipisi said “this does not need the supervision of Department of Water and Sanitation, but requisite support in the form of identification of additional resources for the foreseeable future in order to improve and ultimately attain water security.
He however explained that there were no plans to place WUC on remedial action under the supervision of the then Department of Water Affairs currently called Department of Water and Sanitation.
He told the House that the institutions had different mandates, adding that following the water sector reforms, which took place between 2009 and 2013, WUC was tasked with the mandate of supplying Batswana with water across the country.
Mr Moipisi said the Department of Water and Sanitation was responsible for water resources management.
The assistant minister pointed out that the WUC continued to experience challenges in undertaking its mandate of providing water and sanitation services and in light of the challenges, the ministry was undertaking capital development and maintenance projects countrywide to address the situation.
Mochudi East MP, Mr Moagi Molebatsi had asked the minister if he would consider placing the corporation on remedial action supervised by the Department of Water Affairs. ENDS
