04 Apr 2019

Minister of Transport and Communications, Ms Dorcas Makgato says the ministry has two people with albinism in its employ and 58 people with various other disabilities.

Ms Makgato said some of the employees in question were employed by Botswana Post, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTCL) and Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).

She explained that 44 of the employees were male while 16 were female.

She said 52 of them were employed within the ministry and its headquarters while Botswana Post and BTCL employed three each and BOCRA two.

The minister added that under Goal No. 8 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Botswana aimed to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

She said the country aimed to achieve all SDGs by the target date of 2030, stating that individual ministries could help contribute to the attainment of the set target.

Ms Makgato, however, stated that at the moment, she could not state categorically if the number of people in question met the country’s target.

Specially elected MP, Mr Mephato Reatile had asked the minister to state the number of people with albinism and other disabilities employed in the ministry as well as by Botswana Post, BTCL and BOCRA.

He wanted to know if the number of people employed met the country’s target of the UNSDGs No.8 of promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth and employment and decent work for all. ENDS
