Partnership key in development

03 Apr 2019

North West District Council (NWDC) has appreciated stakeholders’ contribution to infrastructural development in the district.

The council has been enjoying strong partnerships with some donors for some years.

The donors played a key role in providing essential services such as health and education, which could not immediately be provided due to budgetary constraints.

The council secretary, Mr Stephen Motlogelwa, appreciated efforts by stakeholders during the council’s excellence awards aimed at recognising council employees’ commitment, dedication and service excellence.

Stakeholders were awarded certificates of appreciation for their input, while employees were given certificates and prize money.

Mr Motlogelwa explained that they had been approached by several donors who wanted to partner with the council in infrastructural developments and services such as schools.

He cited that during 2014/15 and 2017/18 financial years, the council was approached by donors who wanted to promote education in the district through provision of educational facilities.

Sexaxa and Khwai were identified as potential beneficiaries, and thus projects were implemented at these settlements.  Following incorporation of Sexaxa into Maun village in 2013, Mr Motlogelwa revealed that the move called for the provision of infrastructural developments and services as primary school learners attended school at Matlapana, which is 15km away.

In 2014, a private company by the name And Beyond proposed to donate a school for the Sexaxa community. The facilities which were funded and constructed by the donor included two classroom blocks, four cubicle toilet blocks and a kitchen.

Another project he mentioned was the construction of Khwai Primary School by Okavango Air Rescue, who funded a seven (7) stream primary school. The project was successfully completed and handed over to council.

The Japanese embassy was also appreciated for construction of a pre-school at Tlhale Primary School in Gumare village. Mr Motlogelwa observed that the project was ideal as early childhood education in the region had been underprovided, contributing to poor academic performance.

Two men namely; Mr Bagami Modisaemang and Mr Tollie Jullio were also recognised for their spirit of volunteerism. The duo were said to have volunteered to construct a house for a needy person free of charge, a project initiated by council staff as part of their community service activities.ENDS
