Officer hails environmental education

01 Apr 2019

Sedie Junior Secondary School and Komana Primary School have been praised for their active participation in environmental education.

Regional environmental education coordinator, Ms Veronica Ridge, commended the two schools during a joint environmental discussion and tree planting day in Komana recently.

She said environmental education clubs from the two schools had taken the lead in environmental issues.

Ms Ridge explained that the environment was gradually changing because of climate change and emphasised the need for pupils to be taught about issues of conservation and management of their environment at a tender age.

She noted that the environment means soil, plant, water and animals, which she said all needed to be managed well to ensure sustainability.

She cited that if trees were cut, the underground water would evaporate and the nutrients would be destroyed and as such, the trees which may be planted could not be sustained.

Ms Ridge said pupils needed to have full information about such issues on how climate change impacts on the environment.

Failure to look after the environment, she said would affect the community negatively in future.

Ms Ridge encouraged students and teachers of the two schools to continue with their hard work and wished the Ministry of Basic Education could encourage other schools in the region to establish environmental education clubs.

Mr Tebogo Mogaetsho from Sedie School said the main objective of the day was to give students a platform to discuss issues that they know and ask questions on issues regarding climate change as well as do litter picking and tree planting in Komana Village.

Discussions focused on issues of climate change, water conservation, how to approach environmental issues as well as learners contribution on spreading the gospel of environmental issues.

He appreciated the good work by learners and teachers from both schools.

He said the schools enjoy a good working relationship since they were the only ones with clubs in the region.

He said they benchmark from each other and jointly hold activities.

Meanwhile, the department of Forestry and Range Resource donated trees, 150 of which were planted at Komana village, while Sedie club contributed 85 trees. ENDS
