Residents owe town council P5.5 million
01 Apr 2019
Mayor of Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC), Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa has appealed to residents of Selebi Phikwe to service their Self Help Housing Agency (SHHA) loans.
Mr Molosiwa, who was addressing a kgotla meeting at Kagiso ward in Selebi Phikwe recently informed the residents that SPTC was owed P5.5m in service levy and SHAA loans.
He said it was important for residents to pay these rates to enable the council to undertake other developments in town.
Mr Molosiwa said funds allocated to the council was not sufficient as the bulk of the money was used to pay salaries of employees, hence the council was unable to undertake developments as it desired due to financial constraints.
He reminded them that the service levy was only P33 per month, urging residents not to default.
Mr Molosiwa urged those in arrears to consult the council and make a payment plan, adding that failure to pay the rates may result in the council taking action against the defaulters.
He further informed the residents about the upcoming Toyota 1000 Desert Race which would be held in Selebi Phikwe in June.
Even though a steering committee was appointed for the event, Mr Molosiwa urged residents to also prepare themselves for the upcoming event.
He implored them to clean their surroundings and encouraged those with small businesses to take advantage of the race to earn money.
Mr Molosiwa said the council on the other hand would also ensure that Selebi Phikwe was clean and would further do maintenance on roads, traffic lights as well as street lights.
He said some areas such as Sam Sono Stadium, Anne Adam’s Park, Makhubu Club and town hall would be used as camp sites.
On other issues, Mr Molosiwa informed the residents that government was working round the clock to resuscitate the economy of Selibe Phikwe, which crumbled after the closure of BCL Mine.
He said the council and other stakeholders such as the Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit were also doing their best to come up with initiatives geared towards resuscitating the economy of the town.
He urged residents to make use of the existing government programmes to improve their livelihoods.
The residents thanked the mayor for updating them about the upcoming desert race and vowed to support the council and other stakeholders to make the event a success. ends
