Lions Club International seeks more female members

The Lions Club International is calling for more female involvement in the club’s leadership positions.
The district governor-elect of the Lions Club International, Ms Tshidi Serame, said this during a women’s symposium in Palapye recently.
Addressing the women’s symposium, she said Lions Club International was focused on increasing the number of women in its membership.
Ms Serame said the symposium that also attracted members from Zimbabwe, emphasised the importance of bringing in the girl child to the club, noting that women are just as capable as men.
“The percentage ratio of membership of women and men is 50.4:49.6 per cent, and this reflects that there are more women than men in the club, but in leadership positions, females are still lagging behind,” she said.
She called for women to work hard to prove their capabilities, adding that in 1917 during the formation of Lions Club International, there were no women and in 1987, women were approved for membership to the club.
She thus encouraged women to standout to be the next district governors and district commissioners and to help one another to rise to higher positions.
For her part, a member of Lions Club International, Ms Sylvia Muzila, who is also Francistown mayor, said women were important in leadership positions, especially in kind-hearted organisations like Lions Club.
The district commissioner of Lions Club International, Ms Shuvai Phiri from Zimbabwe, who is also a women and family specialist, said should they join the Lions Club, women and girls could have a sense of belonging.
She explained that it is important for women to serve the community because they better understand community needs. Ends
