Bikers brace for Africa champ

Gaborone Motor Club chairperson, Koziba Lebala says they are working round the clock to select a team that will represent the country at the annual FIM Africa motocross championship penciled for Zimbabwe in August.
Speaking on the sidelines of the second round of Botswana Motorcross National Championship held on the outskirts of Mmopane on March 30, Lebala said he was hopeful that despite a dismal performance from the team in last year’s race that was held in Zambia, the riders, mostly young and hungrier to compete against Africa’s tried and tested, were raring to go and show their competitors a clean pair of pedals.
He said they intend to send a considerable number of riders for the Zimbabwe event.
Meanwhile, on March 30, Kosmas Mamaloukos led the high school class category followed by Teto Chibana and Zander Clulow while Victor Du Toit led the pack in the Mx2 category beating the much fancied Boineelo Rantao.
The versatile Mamaloukos took control of proceedings and arrived comfortably after securing a sizeable margin in the second round.
He carried his winning momentum to the following heats and ended up the overall winner in his class.
Rantao had a good start in the elite class owing to the absence of reputable rider, Ross Branch, who is currently in the desert south of Morocco competing in the physically taxing Afriquia Merzouga Rally. Another bitter rival Vincent Crosbie could not attend the Saturday event due to other pressing commitments.
Owen Clulow was in the lead in the Mx vets while Janine Du Toit led the Mx ladies category.
It was a tough and exciting competition between the likes of the Tafa siblings Tabona and Tadiwa, Janine Du Toit, Tefo Chibana and the brother Elang Chibana amongst others.
The event was hosted by the Botswana Motorsport in conjunction with the Gaborone Motor club.
The next round is an off-round duel on the last week of April in Jwaneng and the Malotwane rally will follow after. ENDS
