Workmans Compensation Act covers wildlife officers

26 Mar 2019

Wildlife officers killed by wild animals while on duty are compensated using the Workman’s Compensation Act Chapter 47:03.

This was said by the Minister of Environment, Natural Resource Conservation and Tourism, Mr Kitso Mokaila when responding to a question in Parliament from Mochudi East MP, Mr Moagi Molebatsi.

“There is no other dispensation available beyond this.

This is also applicable to all government employees,” he said.

When human beings not working for government are killed by wildlife, Mr Mokaila said government paid funeral expenses at the rate of P20 000 and exgratia at the rate of P50 000.

This, he said, was because non-government employees were not covered by Workman’s Compensation Act Chapter 47:03.

Mr Molebatsi had asked Mr Mokaila to state how Wildlife officers were compensated when killed by wild animals while on duty and what happened in the case where a human being was killed by wild animals. Ends
