Mayor commends professionals for creative solutions

Home Economics professionals have been commended for coming up with creative solutions to various challenges such as poverty and nutrition.

Speaking during the Home Economics Day commemoration in Selebi Phikwe on March 20, town mayor, Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa said the profession advocated for life skills intended to achieve optimal and sustainable wellbeing for individuals, families and communities.

The profession, he said also imparted knowledge on the use of naturally available resources for optimal economic gain. Mr Molosiwa further said Home Economics education facilitated the development of knowledge and skills, which in turn enhanced decision-making and established work or life balance.

“All these are achievable through engaging and educating people on a variety of Home Economics contexts such as food, nutrition and health, clothing and textiles, arts and crafts as well as entrepreneurship,” noted the mayor.

He also encouraged home economics professionals to be more proactive in ensuring the development of successful income-generating initiatives and to form effective strategic alliances to drive this life skills empowerment agenda.

“I encourage you to be creative and innovative enough so that we attain our aspiration of achieving prosperity for all as envisioned in the Vision 2036 roadmap,” said Mr Molosiwa.

In addition, he applauded United Nations for according the International Federation for Home Economics a permanent seat within its structures to serve as an advisory body on all matters pertaining to the enhancement of the quality of life for individuals and families.

For her part, University of Botswana’s lecturer, Dr Potlako Disele also concurred that home Home Economics improved the quality of the individual, family and community.

She said the discipline possessed a rich and integrated knowledge for people to develop their capacity for personal wellbeing, adding that it educated people about nutrition and social and organisational skills. ENDS
