21 Mar 2019

Parliament has been informed Tutume Sub-district Council collected 287 matimela cattle during financial years 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19. The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse said from the total collected in the three financial years, the total number claimed by owners stood at 35.

Answering a question in parliament from MP for Nkange, Mr Edwin Batshu, the assistant minister said the council raised funds through public auction sale of the unclaimed matimela cattle and generated a total sum of P116 398 in 2016/17 financial year. Mr Autlwetse mentioned that for the financial year 2017/18 the total amount collected was P18 027.50 and for 2018/19 a total of P94 323.50 was raised for council.

The minister explained that the ministry was currently satisfied with matimela collection services at the Tutume Sub District as collection campaigns were conducted and animals identified by lawful owners were released. Mr Batshu had asked the minister how many matimela cattle were collected by the Tutume Sub-district Council during 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years. The legislator also wanted to know if the minister was satisfied with the rate at which matimela cattle were collected in that sub-district Council and if not, what action would be taken to improve the situation.
