Supplementary registration to increase number of voters

19 Mar 2019

Kgatleng District Council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong, has called on voters to utilise the second national supplementary voter registration scheduled for April 15 -28.

He said this during a full council session in Mochudi on March 18,.

This registration, he said,  would be done from polling stations.

Mr Morolong said the purpose of the supplementary registration was to raise the number of registered voters.

He said the exercise was also meant to accommodate those who did not manage to register during the general registration due to various reasons including lack of national identity cards, lack of motivation and laxity.

Mr Morolong said the registration also accommodated those who had not attained the age of 18 at the time of the initial registration.

He said statistics from the current supplementary registration showed that Mochudi East constituency stood at 471 as at March 1 while Mochudi West was at 803.

Furthermore, Mr Morolong said the district registration office had recorded a total of 1 936 registrations for national identity cards, with 284 as duplicates, 345 new applicants and 1 307 renewals.

He said, despite all the outreach initiatives to improve collection and distribution of identity cards, 1 480 cards still awaited collection at the civil and national registration office.

Mr Morolong encouraged the public and councillors to assist in mobilising electorates to collect their identity cards.

He also said the number of people registered for poverty Eradication packages is at 4 881 as at February and increasing daily.

He said looking at the large number of people who registered, the department of social and community development was planning to conduct a mass assessment in April to speed up assessment.

The chairperson also said early childhood programme was growing in the district as evidenced by opening of four day care centres this year in that this brings them to the total of 52. Ends
