18 Mar 2019

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Thato Kwerepe, says the decision to keep a 67-year-old Physics teacher was necessitated by the shortage of physics teachers in the country.Mr Kwerepe said this when answering a question from the MP for Nkange, Mr Edwin Batshu in Parliament on March 14.

He said the teacher who is over the retirement age was under a contract which would end in April 2020. The assistant minister stated that although the retirement age for the Public Service was 60 years old, for teachers who joined the service before May 2010 (Public Service Act) were required to retire at age 65.

MP Batshu had asked the minister to state the number of teacher above retirement age who were still under his employ and when they would retire them in favour of young, unemployed, qualified teachers. ENDS
