Chairperson of Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Kgosi Puso has hailed government for introducing ‘excellence awards,’ which aim to recognise employees’ efforts in the public service.
Speaking during the first ever Tribal Administration excellence awards that were held in Maun recently, Kgosi Puso said the initiative was ideal as it promoted productivity in the workplace.
He revealed that research had shown that after awarding employees, the following were realised; increased individual productivity, greater employee satisfaction and enjoyment of work, direct performance feedback for individuals, higher loyalty and satisfaction scores from customers, enhanced teamwork between employees and retention of quality employees, among others.
He said the dangers of not rewarding employees in the workplace included high levels of corrupt practices and nepotism, negative influence of co-workers, absenteeism and less respect from customers, being miserable in the workplace and destroying what the most engaged employees build.
Kgosi Puso challenged awardees to keep up the good work and continue serving the communities to their expectations and be exemplary to others.
He also stressed the need for the department to find ways to maintain high levels of productivity in the workplace and encouraged management to strive for continuous improvement of the department, which he said was people centered.
Deputy permanent secretary in the ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Duke Masilo appreciated that a lot had been achieved in an effort to improve the department, noting that previously, it was marred by challenges such as disgruntled employees and shortage of resources. Ends
