Conducive environment for learners crucial

14 Mar 2019

North East region education director Mr Labane Mokgosi has implored schools to create conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Speaking at the region’s retreat in Nata on March 12, Mr Mokgosi said schools management, teachers and general staff should understand that their core business mandate in school was formulated around nation- building through education.

He thus said teachers should ensure that their core business objectives were met on a daily basis for the expected outcomes to be achieved.

Mr Mokgosi noted that it was imperative to have a conducive environment where either leaners or any other person within the schools could open up and share their concerns and challenges.

In that way, he said problems would be easily addressed.

He highlighted that some schools were failing to produce results not because they did not have the capabilities, but because there was no correlation and proper communication channels to follow in order to address hiccups that might be there.

The director further noted that schools management should take proper steps and address issues of back biting mud slinging within the staff so that what remains should be the execution of the education mandate and achievement of goals.

Furthermore, Mr Mokgosi said they were in the processes of issuing schools and individual teachers with basic standards, which they should follow and obey.

He said every teacher would be expected to have a target for every learner in their class because ultimately the learners were the ones that bring results.

He encouraged teachers to make arrangements of how best they could assist struggling pupils in their classes.

He lamented that there had been cases where a student would progress to junior secondary school having difficulties of even writing their name.

He said such cases should be dealt with at lower grades, noting that at Standard One teachers should ensure that all pupils go through a breakthrough period and grasp the concepts.

He therefore put emphasis on proper planning from regional management to schools and that it should be done prior to the peak period of teaching and learning. ENDS
